His right hand is extended downward in the Earth Witness gesture, touching the ground to call upon the earth to witness his victory over the illusions of Mara and his attainment of truth. His left hand rests in his lap in the meditative gesture, holding a sacred alms bowl that symbolizes the path of renunciation.
