Who is Vajradhara?
The Primordial Buddha and Source of All Tantras
In the vast cosmology of Vajrayana Buddhism, Vajradhara represents the ultimate essence of enlightened mind. He is recognized as the Primordial Buddha—the Dharmakaya form from which all other Buddhas, lineages, and tantric teachings emanate.
Introduction: The Essence of the Diamond Holder
Unlike historical Buddhas who appear in time, Vajradhara signifies the timeless, unconditioned nature of reality. For practitioners of the New Translation schools, he is the eternal teacher who manifests the "Diamond Vehicle" (Vajrayana) to lead advanced disciples toward rapid realization.
"Vajradhara is the midnight-blue space of reality. He is the mirror of our own innate Buddha-nature, representing the inseparable union of wisdom and compassion."
Lineage and the Vajrayana Path
Vajradhara is considered the origin of the tantric lineages, providing the foundational blessing for many spiritual schools:
- The Kagyu Tradition: He is the source of the "Golden Rosary" lineage, having directly transmitted teachings to the Mahasiddha Tilopa.
- The Sakya Tradition: He is the central figure of the Lamdre (Path and Its Fruit) teachings and the transmitter of the Hevajra Tantra.
- Guru Yoga: In meditation, the practitioner visualizes their own teacher in the form of Vajradhara to tap into the ultimate source of enlightenment.

The Role of Vajradhara in Meditation
Practicing on Vajradhara is not about worshipping an external deity, but about uncovering the "Vajradhara within." By meditating on his form, practitioners aim to dissolve the ego-grasping that prevents them from seeing their own mind's true luminosity. He reminds us that enlightenment is not a goal to be reached, but a primordial state to be revealed.
