This magnificent Thangka portrays Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the revered "Lotus-Born" master who is often considered the "Second Buddha" across the Himalayas. Seated in a posture of royal ease upon a multi-coloured lotus throne, Guru Rinpoche is adorned in heavy, richly patterned tantric robes and his characteristic lotus hat. His right hand holds a five-pronged golden vajra at his heart, symbolizing indestructible skillful means. His left-hand rests in his lap, cradling a skull-cup (Kapala) filled with the nectar of immortality and the vase of long life, representing wisdom and longevity. Resting against his left shoulder is the Khatvanga staff, adorned with three severed heads signifying his triumph over the three root poisons of ignorance, attachment, and aversion.
